Bullet point match report due to World Cup related time constraints:
1. KPR were in need of a positive result after copping a flogging in the previous game against Ring-In Suburbs....sorry, I mean Eastern Suburbs.
2. Tommo Ishiguro announced before kickoff that he was heading back to Japan to take charge of a global Ugg Boot empire - I think that’s what he said anyway, I might have misheard him. A fantastic player and a top bloke who will be sorely missed.
3. The referee was a no show and the Rams were keen to pull the plug and reschedule the game. Step forward some random cockney passerby, who agreed to ref the game despite (and I quote) ‘having an absolute skinful last night mate’.
4. The KPR massive dominated the opening exchanges but, as has often been the case in recent performances, the end result did not match the quality of the build up play.
5. On the 20 minute mark, the Rovers found themselves in more trouble than Jason Akermanis, speed dating in the Wickham, when the visitors conjured up an opening goal very much against the run of play to take an unexpected lead.
6. The home side kept their shape & composure and pulled one back soon afterwards. An inch perfect Niall Clancy pass was collected in the box by Neil Gibson, who kept his head, skipped round the fast approaching Bethania keeper and slotted home.
7.The second half was a scrappy affair, with a whole lot of blood, sweat, badly measured passes, loose control and wayward shooting - but no more goals.
8. A mixed afternoon for KPR, with the slick passing and clinical finishing of round 1 seemingly a distant memory. However, the first point gained against a top 4 team so far this season was not to be sniffed at and a definite positive to take away from the game.
9. Good performances by Grant Preston, Des Ward, Tom Beattie, Neil Gibson, Niall Clancy and a few others who I can’t remember now because I’ve been procrastinating about writing this report for so long that I’ve forgotten a lot of what went on!
10. Good luck Tommo!! And thanks to Phil Mitchell from Eastenders for taking charge of the game and doing a better job than most of the other refs we’ve had this year.
